If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed that I've started talking
a lot about this new workout center I've been attending...Pure Barre. Pure Barre is a barre based exercise...think of the small movements that ballerinas do on the barre when working out and practicing. I always looked at those ballerinas and thought...that's so pretty! But it doesn't exactly seem hard....and then I took my first Pure Barre class. Let me tell you...I walked away knowing two very important things:
1) that freaking kicked my you know what and 2) I was officially obsessed.
Pure Barre uses a variety of equipment and small, but incredibly precise movements to create long and lean muscles. And you don't wear shoes! That's incredibly important. Shoes are never allowed in the barre facility. Instead, barre goers wear sticky socks (like the ones above) that keep them from slipping. I snagged a pair of pink ones for my first day! You can find similar ones online.
Throughout the class, we used the resistance bands hanging from the barre, the PB ball, and weights. Plus a yoga mat. Pure Barre provides all of this equipment for you so that you never have to worry about bringing your own. Which items you use, how many, and why/how changes every class so that you are not getting the same workout over and over.
The owner of the Pure Barre I attend, Hannah, is an absolute delight. Right when I walked in, all of the instructors introduced themselves and walked me through all the things I would need for class before I got started. I appreciated that I didn't have to go into this class completely blind. They understood that it was a new experience for me, and helped me to get as much knowledge as I could in before beginning a full on class. I think it really helped me to understand (somewhat) what I was doing when class started. They say that it takes 10 PB classes to get it down completely because these movements are so new and seem so odd in the beginning. Plus PB is FAST...so it does take a while to "get it". I've taken 4 classes at this point, and it is a little easier....but it will still take more time to fully understand all of the movements.
The thing I love most about Pure Barre is that even though you are working so many different muscles at the same time, using weights, and sweating like a pig...it's really easy on your joints. It's been hard for me to find a workout that I can really get into because I have a torn rotator cuff (thanks a lot, softball), so it's hard for me to do most traditional workout. I tried yoga and pilates both, but frankly I found them boring. Even though they were great on my joints, they were too slow and didn't work me hard enough. When I was supposed to be mediating or "in the now" I would end up thinking about all of the other stuff I have going on during that day...kind of defeating the point.
Pure Barre is fast and relies to much on the little, very precise movements you are making in order to be effective. That means when I am in Pure Barre....my mind is only focusing on Pure Barre. Plus, I can use weights and work on my arm muscles (my least favorite feature) without my shoulder completely hurting the entire time.
Here are just a few of the very precise movements we do in Pure Barre. Please note that I had to take sooooo many photos just to find a few where I didn't look like I was in pain...because I was! It's hard work doing these poses. They might look easy, but many of them are working several muscles at once. At Pure Barre, they have a saying "embrace the shake" because even after only a couple seconds in these positions your whole body is shaking.
So if you're thinking about starting a new workout, may I suggest Pure Barre? It's unbelievably hard, effective, and yet easy on the joints. Try out a class sometime. They offer a discounted rate for your first class, and if you're like me (&& freaking loved it!) you can get an unlimited month of PB for a big discount as well! But no matter what...don't forget the sticky socks!
